Are there, or should I say, were there more than one of you in this

As mentioned in ACF...

It seems too incredible. I last noticed posts by him about a week ago. Was
there any hint of illness?

I hope that it is not true. Someone in ACF was saying there was another
Blinky the Shark, but its hard to think that there possibly could be.

If you search through his last posts, you'll see that last weekend he
was saying he had what amounts to a bad flu, and was having trouble
eating and sleeping.

From following Blinky's last messages in alt.fan.cecil-adams, I would
say/guess that the sequence was flu - then 'silent' pneumonia -
contributing to some terminal cardiovascular event such as a heart attack
or stroke due to the compromised, weakened general health condition of the
flu/pneumonia sequence.

His 'I'm sick' thread followed by his 'improved' contribution to the
holocaust thread sounded like flu turning into 'a little' pneumonia (with
no antibiotic treatment) and then apparent improvement, but with no
treatment, some pneumonia can kill ya' quick. Especially if we are old
enough to have blood vessels in our heart or our head which aren't so good
anymore.

Maybe his brother who found him will report back on any medical/forensic
findings. He was 61.

I posted this info on how to dwnload all of Blinky.net or WSSA.org webpages
to another group Blinky frequented. I hope it helps some fans, here:

------

For Window users, here's a whole slew of gui shareware apps:

http://www.sharewareconnection.com/titles/save-website.htm

Most of them look pretty straightforward. Aim at website and pull the
trigger. As I said, there is a wget for Windows which I have used and it
works great.

For you Linux/*nix folks and ANY wget users, here's are some basic wget
options. Read man wget for further examples:

http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/downloading-entire-web-site-wget

Choose the options you desire.

As for you Mac fans, I haven't a clue since I haven't used an Apple computer
since Apple IIe. Since OS X is based on unix, you should be able to install
wget. Otherwise, just google for all or some of the following words:

mac download website recursive archive.

Also, it looks like Firefox may have and extension called downthemall which
claims to download all links, photos, and "embeded objects". I don't use
FF, so don't know if this software actually downloads the actual formated
webpage content or just the stuff mentioned above. I'll let you folks
explore it:

http://www.downthemall.net/

Thanks, I like "Local Website Archive", it works nicely but..... the
problem is I don't have space to put the website back up if it is taken
down which I'm sure it will be eventually.

So the problem remains, does anyone have space available and is willing
to put Blinky's site back up if it becomes necessary?

Well, I'm not even sure that is possible. There might be copyright issues,
but there is no problem with you saving it to your hard drive.

Many thanks for that, Mike. Pneumonia can become a serious illness if
left unchecked the risk of complications are great and can be fatal.

I am deeply saddened by this news. I joined the UIP as soon as I heard
about it. And Blinky and I have had a couple of interesting conversations.
You will be missed.

Now, is there any way that the UIP could be moved to my web server? I

There are disadvantages to going to the doctor for minor illnesses. It
isn't (always) 'harmless' and it (often) isn't free and it isn't (ever)
convenient. But, self-diagnosis ('I just have the flu and a cough - I'll
be getting over it soon') is potentially dangerous when the self-diagnosis
is in (partial) error.

> I tell you what. I'll be sure to be nagging the hell out of my local

It sounds to me like he was sick enough to warrant going to the doctor.
He was weak - too weak to stand - and he was having enough fever to get
soaking wet as it cycled. We shouldn't always think these things are just
a 'bug' that we can get over all by ourselves

> Once again. Take care Blinky. You were a top fella.

Plonking is lame.
Plonking all Google Groups and Web TV users is Über lame.
Some of my favorite people use Google Groups and Web TV.

I read all replies to me, direct and indirect.
I keep an ordered list of nyms to watch.
I read all posts from Watched nyms, in order, grouped by nym.

Each post has the parent post ( and the deeper heritage ) at the top,
so I can follow the file-name like path up the root; e.g.:
[ oldest first ]
notbob news:Lc1jl.81$Kr1...@newsfe13.iad

Eggs Zachtly news:1m5tums0tlnq6$.d...@sneupie.eingang.org
Top news:gmihcq$j1i$1...@news.albasani.net

All other nyms are “ Muffled ”;
i.e. all but their 3 most-recent posts
are automatically marked as “ Was Read ”.

I keep each nym's 33 most-recent posts, no more.

Each nym is a “ useNet ” page ( like a webpage )
that gets xRanked ( like pageRank, but time sensitive ).
Muffled nyms are sorted by their xRank, post are grouped by nym.

I kill all attribution lines and >quoted lines;
so I see at a glance if I care about a post or not.
I can mark posts as “ Was Read ” damn fast ― no trouble.

Henson saw a doctor (early enough) who missed the diagnosis. He was
looking for pneumonia (but didn't find it) and forgot about complications
of some infections, in Henson's case toxic shock syndrome secondary to the
toxins of the bug causing the undiagnosed pneumonia.

I guess you could say Henson should've gone (back) to (a) doctor - a
different doctor - sooner than he did.

Blinky will be remembered by many for his sharp wit and generous
spirit. He was the life of the party in this group. We are all mortal.
We leave little behind in this world. Yet Blinky left behind many
friends. He touched us all. He will be greatly missed.

To his family we extend our sincere condolences.

I was going to start a Facebook page in his honour, but my first attempt

Truly some sad news. One of the good guys.

Usenet is a lesser place without Blinky the Shark. I'll miss his wit and
willingness. Be at peace, Blinky.

Someone in alt.fan.cecil-adams has already planned this - but, is willing
to give the family time to cope, and it will be their decision after all.

Right now, you can download Blinky's sites to your hard drive using
software like httrack. That way, if the family decides to let the do
domains expire, you will still be able to access Blinky's wit and talent.

Both sites reportedly are only 13 megs on your drive.

Yes, Troy.

Blinky is going to be sadly missed by many, in many diverse areas.

It is very sad that he has passed on, and in the manner that he died, too.
He will be remembered for a very long time to come.

As per recommendation, I downloaded the 'Local Website Archive' app. and

Correct, each page must be archived separately. I gave it a try but
didn't realize at first how little room I have to spare, I'll have to
decide if I want to give up my archived collection of pornographic
wombat pictures or what....

I recollect an old version of IE that would save/synch local copies of
websites and that you could specify maximum levels to go down, but it
_would_ gobble disc-space and I don't see the facility in IE8.

You only have to look at the photographs of him that have been posted

I apologize for not posting the info here that same day as the others.
I had forgotten that he was a regular here, which I guess is silly,
given the whole UIP. Duh.

I'm glad that people are wanting to carry on his mission. Not being
much of a newsgroup guy, and not having any of the client expertise that
he had, it certainly wouldn't be for me.

I'm sure his family wouldn't have any problem with the movement and
mirroring of his sites. I doubt that they are even aware of their
existence, and since they were merely labors of love, there should be no
legal issues around it. I do know that he would want them to live on.

I was planning to do something along those lines, but I remembered the
revulsion he felt when he went to MySpace to set up an account to keep
someone else from stealing his persona.

My comment had nothing to do with your not posting here. Hope you really
didn't take it that way. We all found out when Mike saw the post at the
camera forum, and I think everyone started scrambling to Blinky's
"hangouts" to try and confirm and find if more info was available. I can't
begin to imagine what you've been through, in this whole ordeal. A lot of
us have been following the thread(s) in AFCA, and it was a pleasant
surprise (for me, at least) to see you post here, promising future info.

I (as well as several others) have grabbed the UIP site Some have also
grabbed blinkynet, and while I enjoy that site, I've no space to host that
one. I may have the space available to mirror the UIP, though. We'll see
how many mirrors are put up.

I also agree that he would have wanted at least someone to continue
something he was obviously passionate about. =)

Please don't sweat that. Once you posted, word got around fast.
Thanks for keeping us all informed, and thanks for all you've been
doing there in California.

I knew Blinky only on Usenet and by e-mail for a little over ten years,
and I envy you your real-world friendship with him.

No apology needed. I'm sure we appreciate that you have come here with
a promise of future information. Knowing the pain you must be in
emotionally this speaks volumes. Thank you very much and I'm sure
Blinky's work will be carried on.

Lots of broken links. This is because "/" in the HTML resolves to
"twovoyagers.com/" instead of "twovoyagers.com/blinkynet.net/".

I think you can fix this with .htaccess (or httpd.conf if you have
access to it).

Or by adding

<base href="http://twovoyagers.com/blinkynet.net/" />

in the <head> of the HTML. Not sure which is the preferred
method.

Not at all. I'm just a little embarrassed that, knowing how passionate
he was about his newsreaders, I didn't think to post here, or in
24hrsupport.helpdesk, or in rec.foods.cooking, where he was also a major
contributor. I *did* remember alt.fans.cecil-adams, and of course, the
dpreviews site.

I plan to continue.

Glad to see it, thanks.
Please shout if circumstances change.

Your reward is a largely unrelated URL, albeit concerning another bane
of the internet, "out-of-office replies".
Hopefully Blinky did not set one up :-)
